ABOUT THE COMPETITION

Shoprite and Checkers are famous for the outstanding quality of the meat in their Meat Market departments and the supermarket group is continually on the lookout for new recipes and ideas so consumers can enjoy only the best quality and variety. The annual Champion Boerewors competitions that has been hosted successfully in South Africa for the past eleven years, and Champion Boerewors that will now be held in Namibia for the third year - plays a key role in helping the supermarket Group to achieve this aim. Through this competition Shoprite and Checkers persist in their ongoing endeavour to meet their customers’ needs, by finding a tasty boerewors recipe of good quality that appeals to most customers.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Anyone may enter, but make sure, though, that the recipe entered isn’t just for any sausage – it has to be a traditional boerewors. To be traditional, boerewors must contain at least 90 percent meat - always containing beef, as well as lamb or pork or a mixture of lamb and pork and the fat content of the meat mixture may not exceed 30 percent. Furthermore, the distinctive combinations of spices like coriander, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper as well as fluids like vinegar, water and Worcestershire sauce are what differentiates boerewors from other variants. So, if you want to qualify for the Shoprite Checkers Champion Boerewors competition, please ensure that your recipe is valid.

THE JUDGING PROCESS

The Namibian Chefs Association, a recognised authority on food in Namibia, will take charge of the judging processes this year, and they will be making sure that all entries comply with strict guidelines for making the real thing. All successful entrants will be contacted and provided with an official competition entry number. Entrants must have a valid entry number to be able to participate.

The grand finale that takes place at the “Huisgenoot Hart van Windhoek” festival 7 & 8 September 2012, where the winner drives away with a Nissan NP200 bakkie.

  • The new 2012 Namibia Champion Boerewors in-store
    The 2012 Namibia Champion Boerewors will be available in Shoprite and Checkers stores throughout Namibia as from middle October 2012.
